Benefits of Shavasana, Corpse Pose

Shavasana is one of my favorite Yoga Poses. Easy, not much effort (actually none!) is needed. I love to lie in the Corpse Pose mid afternoon or any time I start to feel tired and need a quick 'pick me up'.

This Yoga posture is a great way to connect with the Earth element and one of the fastest way to reduce Vata dosha . When you are feeling spacey, overwhelmed, or with any other symptoms of high Vata, just lie in the Corpse Pose for a couple of minutes and you will get up revitalized.

Savasana rejuvenates the Central Nervous System (CNS), reduces blood pressure, anxiety, hysteria and helps with insomnia.

The Corpse Yoga posture can be practiced by anyone, anytime (except after eating) at any age. Savasana is the best closing Yoga posture of any Yoga practice. It helps the body & mind to rest, restructure and reorient itself to its new self.

How to Practice Shavasana

1) Lie on your back with hands by your side, palms facing up. Make sure there is enough space between the body and the arms, so the armpits are free. Legs are stretched out and feet slightly separated. The whole body is relaxed and you are not holding onto anything.

2) Take a deep breath in and then completely exhale.

3) Slowly scan your body with your breath and make sure that every part is completely relaxed.

4) Focus your mind on your breath and then try to completely let go and relax.

5) When you want to get up, slowly roll over to your right side, legs bend and rest on your right side for a couple of breaths.

6) Move slowly to a sitting position when ready.
